Somehow it got sidelined. I didn’t think it was as sharp as my new shiny 100-400 zoom. And maybe it isn’t, but I've started using it again this year. For some reason I was struggling to get a sharp image of a Juniper Hairstreak butterfly. So I pulled out my old 180 macro lens to try and get something I liked. To my surprise it worked.

It was exciting to load up the van and head out. We visited Lori’s mom on Manitoulin Island. It was wonderful to be able to go into her home and give her a hug.

Our last big trip was 2016 when we drove to Yukon Territory. We were away for 3 months and drove to the Arctic Circle and back. It was a wonderful, productive trip. When we travel, we work everyday and are constantly moving, exploring and of course taking photos.

What a year! A new house, a new town and a pandemic. Such mixed emotions. Still we are hopeful for a better year in 2021. Not that this year has been bad for us. We have been limited in where we could go and what we could do but we made the best of it. I’m so glad we moved when we did. Just in the nick of time.
I worked most days. The world seems a little smaller these days. We are adjusting to our new reality. Sometimes limits can enhance creativity. Keith Richards once said about open G tuning on his 5-string Telecaster – “5 strings, 3 notes, 2 hands and 1 asshole”. One of the first songs he used this tuning on is the brilliant “Street Fighting Man” from Beggars Banquet. The images were not loading. I needed to look for an old image that I prepped back in 2009. So I dug out a backup drive and found the file. While looking for that image, I had a quick look through my Polar Bear trip files. I noticed several good images hadn't been picked as keepers.

It has taken this long to actually feel "retired". It has been a busy time. We are finally starting to slow down a bit. We love our new house and the town we live in.

It’s not like me to be at a loss for words. I'm not sure what to say. It's hard to know where this is all going at this stage. So far we have been able to get everything we need and are staying safe and healthy. I didn’t see it coming though. Not like this.
We are huddled in our new house in Picton, Ontario. I never intended to stay this long. It was just meant to supplement my income as I continued to travel and build a photography business. But teaching at college became part of my life. It grabbed me. I started out teaching just one 3-hour class per week. Instantly I was hooked.

I must have played hundreds of guitars over the years. It is hard for me to just pass by a guitar shop without stopping in. The Mill Wheel (now long gone) was the first store I frequented. Every time I was downtown Toronto, I would pop in, pick up something and play. One of those guitars has haunted me ever since. We are going through yet another heat wave in the city. Lori had dried laundry in the backyard. She must have brought in a Cicada in the laundry basket. We are seeing them everywhere right now. My first guitar was not much to look at. It was a small parlour sized Sears special. It killed my fingers to play. I was 10 years old and it was the start of a life long fascination with the guitar. I’m not sure what happened to it. Maybe I gave it away, can’t even remember.
My next guitar was full sized but not much better quality. It can be a bit cliché. However, sometimes it is so beautiful, you just can’t help yourself.

I was 8 years old when I received my centennial coin at school. It was also the year my Dad’s company printed a book called Canada – A Year of the Land. The book celebrated Canada’s 100th birthday.
Dad brought home tear sheets for me to put up on my walls. The photos really stuck with me. (See Composite for more information on how the train illustration above was created.)
That image has been published several times over the years so I wanted to create some more.
I don’t have many train photos. I take them sporadically as I travel. The one below is from Toronto. It started out very plain. After shooting everyday for 10 weeks, you see things differently. I can afford to be picky about what I shoot. I can also just relax a bit and have some fun. I don’t have any expectations. I just shoot when I want and what I want.

That’s what my dad used to say to me. In other words, work hard and be prepared. Working with animals can be very unpredictable. There are things I do to better my chances of getting a shot. I preset the cameras, clear the cards everyday, charge the batteries and have the cameras out ready to grab in the van.
